Subjective experience of abstinence and quality of life in patients after treatment for psychoactive substance dependence
Abstract
Objective: Substance dependence significantly impacts an
individual's quality of life. The aim of this thesis is to explore the
quality of life among clients who have completed treatment for substance
dependence and are currently abstinent. The focus is on their subjective
perception of quality of life across various domains – physical and mental
health, interpersonal relationships, work life, spirituality, and overall life
satisfaction – as well as on factors that positively or negatively influence
it.
Material and Methods: The research was conducted using a qualitative
approach through semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire survey. The
research sample consisted of five respondents who had undergone treatment for
substance dependence and were at various stages of abstinence. Data were
analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis.
Results: All respondents viewed abstinence as a key factor in positive
life change. Abstinence contributed to improved health, better family
relationships, increased work motivation, and greater stability. Protective
factors identified included support from loved ones, therapeutic care, spiritual
practices, and meaningful leisure activities. Risk factors included stress,
loneliness, and social stigma. However, quality of life remained subjective and
dependent on personal satisfaction and inner motivation.
Conclusion: Findings suggest that quality of life after addiction
treatment can significantly improve when clients receive adequate social
support, access to follow-up care, and engage in meaningful life activities.
A holistic approach to addiction treatment – one that considers biological,
psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions – is essential. The study
also highlights the importance of reducing stigma, which often hinders the
reintegration of individuals recovering from addiction into society.
