Abstract

Canistherapy, that is, targeted interventions involving a specially trained dog, is still only marginally represented in Czech school settings, even though its benefits have been demonstrated in various areas of pupils’ cognitive, social, and emotional development. This study aims to analyse the possibilities, conditions, and challenges associated with implementing canistherapy in mainstream schools based on the accounts of eight canistherapists working in school environments. Using qualitative thematic analysis of semi structured interviews, the study presents key factors influencing the quality and feasibility of canistherapy in schools, including certification of canistherapy teams, attitudes of school leadership, the role of parents, hygienic and safety considerations, and the specificities of working with different age groups. The study further shows how canistherapy contributes to improving classroom climate, pupil motivation, stress reduction, and the support of pupils’ social functioning. The findings highlight the need for standardized certification, methodological guidance for schools, and broader awareness of the benefits of this method.
